Dealing with difficult tenants

The aim of these online sessions is to support landlords deal with conflict that can arise during a tenancy.

Being a landlord requires many skills, some of which are more straight forward than others. Dealing with difficult situations that can occur during a tenancy is less straightforward and can be a challenge for landlords who are often managing this on their own. We will look at how matters can escalate and examine how skills and techniques used in mediation can be of real help.

To cover the topic in full, we have created two sessions. The first session helps us recognise why conflict arises and the second session goes on to help us manage conflict that we couldn't prevent.

Whilst each session can stand alone, the second session builds on concepts introduced in the first session so we strongly recommend you attend both.

Session 1: Reasons for conflict in Private Rented Sector Tenancies (1 hour)

  • Understand how conflict can arise and how to get away from entrenched positions to identify underlying interests and needs.

Session 2: Managing conflict in Private Rented Sector Tenancies (1 hour)

  • Now that you have looked at why conflict arises, this session looks at why conflict escalates and how active listening and reframing skills can help.

Having completed both sessions, you will be able to:

  • recognise situations where conflict could arise
  • use mediation tools to de-escalate conflict
  • understand how to access mediation should you need to.

You may not be experiencing this situation at present, but attending will ensure you have the skills needed should it arise in the future.
